Stent surgery

I have questions in regards to stent surgery, my husband is 59 years old and has diabetes. we have consulted with our doctor which he said he has 80% blockage on his main left artery, prox LAD, AVN, Prox CX, OM 2, and 90% distal CX. He is advised to have several stents placed. He's been feeling cold on his back and some nights he would be short on breath especially after he's playing badminton.
Do you think his condition is fatal? and which option is better having bypass surgery or angioplasty surgery for his condition. Is there vitamins/drugs that could increase his HDL level? Also does stent surgery has significant risk that could worsen his current state since the side effects of stent surgery is retenosis and recoil?
