Statins are a class of medicines used frequently to lower the blood cholesterol levels.  The drug is able to block the action of a chemical in the Liver, essential for producing cholesterol.

Cholesterol is a lipid substance that is naturally produced by the liver as well as absorbed from the food we eat. But anything in excess has its own ill effects. When cholesterol level exceeds the normal level it can easily clog in the arteries leading to increased blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes as well. There are two types of cholesterol, namely the LDL (Bad) and the HDL (Good).

Liver makes up about 80% of the requirement and therefore our diet needs to supplement only the rest 20%.  Excess cholesterol in the body causes increase in its flow in the circulatory system, which is the precursor of atherosclerosis, where the fat is deposited on the sides of the walls of the arteries leading to narrowing
